Abstract
The water footprint of rice cultivation at the Himalaya farm, a 13.5 ha area within the El Juncal Medium-Scale Land Improvement District – ASOJUNCAL, in the municipality of Palermo (Huila, Colombia), was estimated. The methodology proposed by the Water Footprint Network (WFN) was followed, and the open-source software CROPWAT 8.0 was used to calculate water requirements based on soil data from the area. This allowed for the estimation of the green, blue, and grey water footprints of the rice production cycle. According to the results, the average total water footprint is estimated at 1,402 m³/t per month, comprised of 19% green water, 71% blue water, and 10% grey water. The analyses reveal a high appropriation of blue water, resulting in economic losses for farmers in operating expenses, and a low appropriation of green water utilized by the crop, while grey water levels are relatively low. Finally, sustainable response strategies are proposed to minimize the water footprint of rice cultivation by promoting the efficient use of resources.
